Travel Writing

How did I get into travel writing? Well I've always been, and always will be, a traveller. I love planes and ships, I love airports and hotels and I love going somewhere new and exploring the area, researching the history and talking to anyone and everyone.

The actual writing about it started when I was writing general features for a cross section of magazines and I was asked for something 'holiday orientated' for a summer special. At that time I used to go to Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca, Spain, regularly so I chose Benidorm. They liked it and I carried on to write a selection of travel features for a series of competitions before moving onto other destinations and other magazines and newspapers, as well as writing a series of travel related features covering the usual holiday queries of:

Veggie friendly Destinations.
Eco-friendly Tourism.
Pros and cons of Cruising.
Join the Scuba Set.
Getting Married in Paradise.

Probably because of the years I spent travelling the globe when I was young, I am always off at the drop of a hat and I enjoy travelling either with company or alone, although I am selective now to the extent that I specialise in holiday destinations. After the military coups in West Africa and other assorted problems around the world that I've got caught up in, I really don't have the urge to be adventurous and go yomping in the Himalayas or backpacking across the Sahara but I have fun nevertheless.

From Lapland to the Turks and Caicos Islands, from New York to the New Forest, from Devon to Cancun, from Florida to Las Vegas, I've done them all plus a lot more and that is the sort of travelling that I now love.

I've also recently got into cruising and have twice cruised Europe and the Caribbean, including parts of Central and South America, on one of those huge liners that are more like floating holiday resorts. Such fun and so very different from all those years ago when we would sail back and forth to Singapore and Nigeria on ships that were smaller than today's cross-channel ferries!

I've been north to south in Europe, done the east and west coasts in the USA and been island hopping in the Caribbean. I've done the Far East and Africa and, a fleeting touch of the Middle East but when it comes to my favourite then it has to be Florida. One day I might even be lucky enough to retire there.
